Skimmias are small evergreen shrubs with dark green leaves. They bear heads of white flowers in early spring usually preceded by red buds. In female varieties these are followed by clusters of red berries.

Skimmias prefer a moist, acid, fertile soil in shade. Old plants can be cut back to near ground level to rejuvenate.
