Escallonias are a group of mostly evergreen shrubs grown for their glossy green leaves and usually pink or red flowers. Flowers are usually displayed from early to late summer. They can be used as an informal, flowering hedge.

Escallonias will grow in any reasonable garden soil which is not too waterlogged and cope well with dry conditions. They are not terribly hardy, growing well up to zone 8.
